Why is an edifice built with blocks of quartzite more durable than one built of marble blocks? - edifice
The main mineral that makes the marble, calcite, while the main mineral that makes the quartz crystal. Calcite is vulnerable to acid, while the quartz is much more resistant. Therefore, marble is much more easily damaged by acid rain quartzite.
In addition, a quartz is seven on the Mohs scale, while calcite is only three. This means that the marble is softer than quartz and is therefore more susceptible to weathering.
